Update on June 18th: On his 95th day of walking, Pancho walked the last 3 miles with people carrying Earth flags, figures and banners of migratory species, evoking the sacred nature of migration. The culmination of the walk was going to happen at the First Assembly of the Peoples, Neighborhoods and Communities of the San Diego – Tijuana Region, at the Tijuana Cultural Center, organized by Sonia Deotto and Haydé Murakami of OraWorldMandala. As he was crossing the so called US/Mexican “border” on June 15th, he climbed up on the metal turnstile and tied a miniature Earth flag atop amidst the barbed wire.

He and his companions passed the first revolving door and then they had to choose between two lines: Mexicans and Foreigners, to what Pancho said: “We need a third line: one of citizens of the World.”

Without any documents to prove that Pancho grew up in Mexico City, and regardless being a Spanish native speaker, the Mexican authorities detained him and turned him to the Customs Border Protection (CBP, which emitted this report saying he didn’thave the “mental capacity” to be interviewed), becoming the first Mexican deported to the part of the Planet we call the U.S. by the Mexican police.

Actualización, 18 de junio: en el día 95 de su caminata, Pancho caminó los últimos 5 kilómetros con personas que portaban banderas de la Tierra, figuras y estandartes de especies migratorias, evocando la naturaleza sagrada de la migración. La culminación de la caminata iba a ocurrir durante la Primera Asamblea de los Pueblos, Barrios y Comunidades de la Región de San Diego – Tijuana, en el Centro Cultural de Tijuana (CECUT), organizado por Sonia Deotto y Haydé Murakami de OraWorldMandala. Mientras cruzaba la disque “frontera” estadounidense / mexicana el 15 de junio, él subió la puerta giratoria de metal y ató una bandera pequeña de la Tierra en el alambre de púas.

Él y sus compañer@s pasaron por la primera puerta y luego tuvieron que elegir entre dos colas: mexican@s y extranjer@s, a lo que Pancho dijo: “Necesitamos una tercera cola: una de ciudadan@s y campesin@s del mundo”.

Sin ningún documento que pudiera comprobar que Pancho creció en la Ciudad de México, independientemente de que su lengua madre es el castellano, las autoridades mexicanas lo detuvieron y lo entregaron a la Policía Migratoria (CBP por sus siglas en inglés, la cual emitió este reporte diciendo que no tenía “la capacidad mental” para ser entrevistado), convirtiéndose en el primer mexicano deportado a la parte del Planeta que llamamos Estados Unidos por la autoridades mexicanas.

Shared Commitments on the Pilgrimage / Compromisos Compartidos (abajo)

Part of the DNA for the walk is a set of Shared Commitments based on The Longest Walk’s Code of Conduct.

In walking as part of the Camino Hacia Una Familia de la Tierra / Walk Towards One Earth Family, each person agrees to the following:

  • We practice respect for fellow walkers (mind, body, soul, and personal belongings), for all our fellow humans, for all beings, for the Earth herself.
  • There will be no intoxicants in us or on us while we are a part of this Camino.
  • We carry no weapons of any kind (knives, guns, mace, pepper spray, etc.).
  • We are celibate while we are actively engaged as part of the Camino, and we support the right of each person to walk with us free from unwanted sexual attention.
  • We bring small acts of kindness into the world at every feasible opportunity.
  • We share meditation together at the beginning and end of each day.
  • Anyone joining the walk for one or two days are asked to bring what they need to sustain themselves during that time, although no one will be turned away.

Some of those on the walk also choose to practice the following commitments in solidarity with those in migration.  Others are invited to join, although these are not expected of everyone:

  • Carry no money
  • Sleep without tent or sleeping bag except when shelter is offered by those we meet.
  • Eat only what is offered generously by our fellow humans and by the land we walk through.  When foraging we ask permission and tend rather than diminish the plant communities that feed us.
  • Sow seeds that may become part of a vibrant ecology that supports those traveling along this corridor in the years to come.

We are excited to live the vision for our community through this journey.

Al caminar como parte del Camino Hacia Una Familia de la Tierra, cada persona acepta lo siguiente:

  • Practicamos el respeto por l@s compañer@s caminantes (en corazón, mente, cuerpo y alma), por todos nuestros semejantes, por todos los seres, por toda la Tierra misma.
  • No llevaremos intoxicantes ni los consumiremos mientras formemos parte de este Camino.
  • No llevamos armas de ningún tipo (cuchillos, pistolas, gas pimienta, etc.).
  • Somos célibes mientras participamos activamente como parte del Camino, y apoyamos el derecho de cada persona a caminar con nosotr@s libres de atención sexual no deseada.
  • Traemos pequeños actos de bondad al mundo en cada oportunidad posible.
  • Compartimos la meditación junt@s al principio y al final de cada día.
  • Cualquier persona que se una a la caminata por uno o dos días se les pide que traigan lo que necesitan para mantenerse saludables durante ese tiempo, y mientras se sigan estos acuerdos, nadie será rechazado.

Algunas de las personas que caminan también están escogiendo practicar los siguientes compromisos en solidaridad con l@s migrantes y otr@s peregrino@s. Se les invita a otr@s a unirse, aunque no se espera que tod@s sigan estas compromisos:

  • No llevar dinero
  • Dormir sin una carpa o saco de dormir, excepto cuando alguien  ofrezca este tipo refugio.
  • Comer sólo lo que se ofrezca generosamente por nuestros semejantes y por la tierra por la que caminamos. Cuando cosechamos de plantas y árboles, pedimos permiso y atendemos, en lugar de disminuir las comunidades de plantas que nos alimentan.
  • Sembrar semillas que puedan convertirse en parte de una ecología vibrante que apoye a quienes viajan por este corredor en los próximos años y generaciones por venir.

Nos llenamos de entusiasmo poder vivir esta visión para nuestra comunidad a través de este viaje.

2019  a Beginning, with No End…

We are living in times of unprecedented global awareness. It is becoming increasingly more evident the different ways in which we impact each other with the choices we make, from the obvious, in our actions, all the way to the subtler level, in the thoughts we have.

Unfortunately, we are often surrounded by habits of desconeccion and a culture of fragmentation that have great repercussions in the ways we live, and influence our mostly reactions to pain and harm, as opposed to respond with equanimity, love and compassion.

Take the example of the current humanitarian crisis at the so called “border” in the parts of the Planet we call Mexico and the U.S.. Unless we address the root causes of the diaspora forcing our sisters and brothers and their children to migrate, we are going to find ourselves reacting to a never-ending loop of emergencies. In the meanwhile, it is our moral responsibility to treat each other, at the very least, with respect to learn each other’s stories.

But what if we engage in a long term vision to take fierce care of our grand human family and the Earth Community as a whole? A kind of Overground Railroad** facilitating the collective liberation of each and everyone of us. A path so beautiful that strongly calls our heads, hearts, hands and spirits to participate in a small way to bridge our lives with more joy and harmony.

This path is a social sculpture of love in deep collaboration with Nature that will require many generations to be completed as the living root bridges do in the part of the Planet we call Meghalaya. Once we hear and feel our collective heartbeat we refuse to betray our planetary heart.  This is the center and essence of the Camino hacia Una Familia de la Tierra / Walk Towards One Earth Family, containing everything equally and at the same time, because hardships and blessings are inevitably intertwined.  

As multiple forms of disconnection become evident, so the rising up to forge bridges of love that reconnect us all. By losing connection to nature, we have created an ecological divide; by diluting connection with each other, we have manifested a social divide; and by ignoring connection with ourselves, we have deepened our spiritual divide.

This is our attempt to move from difficulty into sanctuary born out of sacrifice. Sacrifice literally understood at its root: “sacrum facere” to make sacred. To be able to re-member that Migration is Sacred.

As a radical stream of light, that is, light coming from our roots, we don’t recognize nation states or any imaginary lines created to fragment our greater undivided love as the grand human family and the Beloved Earth Community. We are humbled by the stewards of the land, our ancestors and the spirit of all humanity. It is our intention to respect and honor all our relations, each and every single one of us, each and every single being living in this glorious Earth.

Camino Hacia Una Familia de la Tierra

2019 un principio sin final

Estamos viviendo tiempos de una conciencia global sin precedentes. Cada vez son más evidentes las diferentes formas en las que nos impactamos mutuamente con las elecciones que tomamos, que van desde lo obvio, en nuestras acciones, hasta el nivel más sutil, que son los pensamientos que tenemos.

Desafortunadamente a menudo estamos rodead@s por hábitos de desconexión y por una cultura de fragmentación que tienen una gran repercusión en las formas que vivimos, e influyen nuestras principalmente reacciones ante el dolor y el daño, en lugar de responder con ecuanimidad, amor y compasión.

Tomemos el ejemplo de la actual crisis humanitaria en la disque “frontera” en las partes del planeta que llamamos México y Estados Unidos. A menos que abordemos las causas de la raíz de la diáspora que obliga a nuestr@s hermanas y hermanos y a sus hij@s a migrar, nos vamos a encontrar reaccionando a un ciclo interminable de emergencias. Mientras tanto, es nuestra responsabilidad moral tratarnos, al menos, con respeto para aprender las historias de cada un@ de nosotr@s.

Pero ¿qué pasaría si nos comprometemos con una visión a largo plazo para cuidar ferozmente a nuestra gran familia humana y a la Comunidad de la Tierra en su totalidad? Una especie de ferrocarril a la luz del día ** que facilita la liberación colectiva de tod@s y cada un@ de nosotr@s. Un camino tan hermoso que llama fuertemente a nuestras mentes, corazones, manos y espíritus a participar de una manera pequeña para unir nuestras vidas con más alegría y armonía.

Esta es una escultura social de amor en profunda colaboración con la Naturaleza que requerirá de muchas generaciones para ser completada, así como los puentes de raíces vivas en la parte del Planeta que llamamos Meghalaya. Una vez que escuchamos y sentimos nuestro latido colectivo, nos rehusamos a traicionar nuestro corazón planetario. Este es el centro y la esencia del Camino Hacia Una Familia de la Tierra, que contiene todo de manera equitativa y al mismo tiempo, porque las dificultades y las bendiciones inevitablemente se entrelazan.

A medida que se tornan evidentes las múltiples formas de desconexión, así también se manifiesta el levantamiento para forjar puentes de amor que nos reconectan a tod@s. Al perder la conexión con la Naturaleza, hemos creado una división ecológica; al diluir la conexión entre personas, hemos manifestado una división social; y al ignorar la conexión con nosotr@s mism@s, hemos profundizado nuestra división espiritual.

Este es nuestro intento de pasar de la dificultad al santuario nacido del sacrificio. Sacrificio entendido literalmente en su raíz: “sacrum facere” hacer sagrado. Para poder recordar que la migración es sagrada.

Como una corriente de luz radical, es decir, la luz que proviene de nuestras raíces, nostr@s no reconocemos los estados nación ni ninguna de las líneas imaginarias creadas para fragmentar nuestro gran amor indivisible manifestado como la gran familia humana y la Comunidad de la Tierra. Estamos llen@s de un sentimiento de humildad por l@s que han cuidado de la tierra, nuestros antepasados ​​y el espíritu de toda la humanidad. Es nuestra intención respetar y honrar todas nuestras relaciones, tod@s y cada un@ de nosotr@s, todos y cada uno de los seres que viven en esta gloriosa Tierra.
